A few intrepid souls crossed the threshold tentatively, uncertain how obvious it would be that they hadn’t stepped foot in a church in years.
A collection of musicians planned and played a few songs about Jesus with passion.
A pastor who doesn’t dress cool enough and isn’t animated enough, talked about God and humans, eternity and tomorrow, Jesus and faith and doubt, for about thirty minutes.
Through these unremarkable human activities God was doing something remarkably divine. Ten people made a decision to turn from their sin to follow Jesus. To ask Jesus to be the forgiver of their sins and the leader of their lives. They were aiming their life at an eternity with God, instead of an eternity without God.
It was a great reminder that Sundays Change Lives.
it’s not that Sunday has some special power (other than making evangelical Christians crave Chik-fil-A). Instead, through the gathering of Jesus’s people on a Sunday to remember the resurrection and wait patiently through the trials and troubles of this life, God is at work.
And that simple truth is why dozens of volunteers wake up early on a Sunday to serve other people looking to be reminded of who God says they truly are. It’s why people give a significant portion of their income to make it possible to gather in an expensive city. It’s why a significant investment of time, money, and prayer goes into Sunday Services.
Thank God that we don’t have to do anything spectacular to experience his love! So much of it is just showing up. Spiritual growth and connection start with showing up. See you Sunday!
